Stone house with an arched wooden door and shuttered windows

Solid wood entrance doors

We build solid wood entrance doors and front doors to the exact size of the opening, in oak, cherry and mahogany, including the arched stone doorways of old town centres.

Made to measure, arches included

A made-to-measure entrance door is built from a survey of the real opening, not from a standard size. In the old centres of upper Molise many entrances have arched stone doorways, uneven thresholds and jambs that are out of plumb: the door has to follow those lines, and that is what we do.

We survey on site. From there we draw the shape of the leaves, the arched fanlight where needed, and the panel layout.

Materials and construction

  • Solid wood: oak, cherry and mahogany are the woods of the entrance doors in our archive.
  • Marine plywood: layers of wood bonded with water-resistant glue, stable and suited to a face exposed to rain and snow.
  • Raised panels inside and out, because the door should look good from indoors too.
  • Wrought iron: exposed hinges and strap hinges, as on traditional doors.
  • Fused glass: decorated glass panels for front doors that need to bring light into the hallway.

Caring for a wooden entrance door

A well-finished solid wood door lasts for decades, as long as the outside face is looked after:

  1. Clean with a barely damp cloth; avoid solvents and harsh detergents.
  2. Check the outside face every year, especially the bottom rail and the area near the threshold, where water and snow collect.
  3. When the wood loses its sheen or starts to turn grey, it is time to renew the finish: sooner is better than later.
  4. Adjust hinges and lock if the leaf starts to rub or does not close cleanly.

Entrance doors: frequently asked questions

Which wood is best for an exposed door?

Oak and mahogany are dense and durable; marine plywood helps in the parts most exposed to damp. The right choice depends on exposure, style and budget, and we discuss it when quoting.
